More than once I've painted on the back of a sketchpad. I like the color and texture. Did you prepare the surface with anything first? For oil a little gel medium can work well but it can make the surface slick.
It feels like an old war poster. Great portrait. I don't know what you mean here about the bases. Graphically it's quite nice though.
no, its just cardboard. yeah its spongy but thats how our instructor wanted us to do it. I would prefer unprimed wood panel with some oil rubbed into it. The base thing is just a stupid joke to make it look like a poster.
